Check Engine Light

The “Check Engine” light might not always bring joy, but it serves as a serious indicator of potential issues within your engine, exhaust system, or battery. Decoding the root problem may require assistance from professional auto technicians or mechanics. The check Engine light is part of the OBD System.  In modern vehicles, the OBD system oversees the emissions system, causing the Check Engine light to illuminate for various issues.

Ignoring the Check Engine light is not advisable. Our NCA technicians are well-versed in OBD II language, and we are here to interpret the messages conveyed by your Check Engine light. We will inform you about the state of your engine or emissions system and provide a written estimate before proceeding with any necessary repairs.

An illuminated check engine light often signals the need to replace the oxygen sensor, catalytic converter, mass airflow sensor, or spark plugs and wires. It can also point to issues such as a loose gas cap, vacuum leak, exhaust gas recirculation valve failure, a dead battery, or trouble with your car alarm. A steady check engine light requires an inspection, while a flashing one demands immediate attention, as the problem may be urgent.

Upon starting a vehicle, all dashboard indicator lights illuminate briefly for a rapid system check. This serves as a diagnostic tool, indicating which bulbs or light bulbs might be malfunctioning.

  • If the Check Engine light is steady, it is advisable to have a mechanic inspect the vehicle promptly, as there are various reasons that could trigger the light to stay on.

  • If the Check Engine light is flashing, it is imperative to pull over and request a tow service as driving further could pose a risk to your engine and catalytic converter.

  • In the case of a previously flashing Check Engine light that has now become permanently on, it is necessary to schedule immediate servicing for your vehicle.

  • After it is serviced, if the Check Engine light remains on, it is acceptable to wait a few days to observe if it turns off. If it persists, contacting your NCA technician to resolve the issue.

  • For a potential quick fix, check for a loose fuel cap. Tightening the cap may cause the Check Engine light to turn off, indicating a resolved issue.
